Hervey Bay

We decided to spend the day in Hervery Bay, seeing what the town was all about. Many people had recommended that we go there, so we thought there must be a ton to do. As we walked around, we could not figure out why anyone came there. There were no people, just a few restaurants and a sprawling empty beach. We looked into renting stand up paddle boards but they wanted $20/hour so we opted for the free kayak that they had at our hostel.

After spending some at the beach, we got bored and decided to walk the 3 miles down to the pier, which was supposed to be the top rated thing to do in town. As we walked, we encountered some biking santas wishing people a Merry Christmas, which we thought was hilarious. Christmas to Australians involves cricket on the beach and BBQs not hot cocoa and fireplaces like it does for us.
As. We walked past the shark museum, we couldn't pass up the opportunity to get a shark attack picture.
When we reached the pier we were so confused. Though it was a long pier, there was nothing on it and nothing around it. It had been described on Trip Advisor like the Santa Moica pier with restaurants and shops. It couldn't have been more of a let down. We had expected to rest and get some lunch before walking back but since there was nothing there, we had to turn right around. My feet were killing me (they have been steadily deteriorating without my arch supports) so we checked out the bus schedule. Of course, after 2:00pm the bus only comes every three hours. I guess that makes sense since there are only 10 people in the whole town. For the first time ever, I tried to hitchhike. It was admittedly a half-hearted attempt because I didn't really know if I was doing it right, but no one picked us up. By the time we got back, it was 5:00pm and all of the cafes around our hostel were closed. We settled on Subway since its cheap and you always know what you will get. Since there was nothing going on in town and we had an early tour of Fraser Island the next day, we just hung out at the hostel before going to bed.
