Rain had other plans...

I slept in this morning which was amazing since I had been feeling drained and exhausted for days. Once I got up, we made our own breakfast of oatmeal and apples at the hostel and decided to head to the beach outside of Miguel Antonio national park. The local bus leaves every 30 minutes and only costs $280 colones or about $0.50USD, so it's a great deal! We grabbed a foot-long sandwich at Subway to split, thinking that would be the cheaper way to go, but it cost $10USD! I was again outraged at this price but Alyssa just laughs and says "when in Costa Rica".
The ride to the beach was only about 10 minutes but when we got there it was a lot more touristy than I'd expected. As we neared the park, there were so many fancy hotels and restaurants and absolutely everything was in English. The beach itself has chairs with umbrellas strewn about (which you could rent) and people on segways cruised up and down.
We lay down in a somewhat shaded area, trying to get as far from other people as possible. This plan didn't work though because we were both approached by different local men trying to use a mix of seduction and sales to convince us that we needed to learn how to surf or salsa dance. We were polite as usual but it's so goddamn annoying when you just want to lay on the beach and not be forced to say "no gracias" every 30 seconds to the people selling pots, bracelets and whirling birds. As we attempted to ignore everyone around us, the clouds rolled in with some violent winds and it started to sprinkle. It looked like it would probably pass over in a matter of minutes so we walked up the beach looking for somewhere to sit or something to do. The whole area was one huge tourist trap of shops selling the same things and over priced restaurants, but the area was definitely beautiful. As it began to rain harder, we decided to duck into one of the restaurants to get a drink and wait out the rain. After 30 minutes, it became clear the rain wasn't going anywhere, so we caught the next bus back to our hostel.
We spent the afternoon hanging out under the gazebo in the center of our hostel, watching the rain pour down all around us. There is really nothing else to do around here except outdoors activities, so we were essentially trapped.
We decided to make our own dinner since the kitchen at this hostel was very clean and we had absolutely nothing to do due to all the rain. We went to three different stores comparing prices but settled on the "Pali" which is kind of like a mini-Costco. We decided on pasta with mushroom-marinara sauce, green beans, garlic toast and a bottle of wine: grand total $10 USD! We bought the bread from a small bakery that we had been eyeing every time we walked by it. Dinner was good, although it was a challenge to cook at the same time as so many of the other people staying at the hostel. After dinner, the rain let up so we decided we would go to the local bar in town and meet up with the two guys we had met at the hostel: Johnathan (French Canadian) and Lars (German). We got there before they did and secured seats near the open window. This was definitely the busiest place we had seen in Quepos and maybe the largest party we had seen in Costa Rica. We stayed out very late (3am) drinking and dancing. Definitely will regret that tomorrow (especially since Alyssa has a cold or sinus infection)...so much mixing of beer, wine and liquor!
