Maderas Beach

We had breakfast at "El Gato Negro" in San Juan del Sur which is an adorable breakfast/bookstore hybrid that serves great food. In an attempt to be healthy, we both ordered homemade Greek yogurt with bananas which was good but had a slightly disturbing chunky texture. We then got on the shuttle which took us to Maderas beach ($5USD round trip from Casa del Oro hostel). The beach was a lot more desolate than I had expected and also pretty rocky but the huge waves made it obvious why it was such a huge surfer destination. We lay on the beach for hours getting some sun and reading.
Then we went for a swim in the water. We had to find an area that was a little calmer because the huge waves broke onto the reefs right near the beach and didn't make an excellent area for swimming. The water was perfect though; nice and cool but not cold.

We grabbed some lunch (fish tacos which were good, but overpriced and much more like burritos) and watched the surfers in the water. We decided to stay under the shade of the awning and read and drink Tonas (a local Nicaraguan beer).
Hugh was in San Juan del Sur now and we ran into the three guys from the UK that we had met on the way to Granada at the beach so we all hung out for the rest of the afternoon. We caught the 5:00 shuttle back to San Juan del Sur and got back into town just in time for sunset.
We grabbed dinner at a chicken cafe in town after an extensive search for the cheapest restaurant we could find- this place is so expensive! The chicken was good and I gave some of the local dogs my scraps. The local dogs are very well behaved and don't beg or fight, but wait patiently to see if you will give them anything- that makes me want to feed them all the time so it's a good strategy, lol. After dinner, the restaurant gave us shots of homemade limoncello which was delicious!
Since it was our last night as a traveling trio, we tried to go out to the bars and have some fun. Unfortunately the town was as dead as ever and we were the only people in any of the bars. So we ended up just getting some ice cream and calling it a night.
