Today we were able to secure a cave tubing excursion (it was one of those things that I had looked into a lot but hadn't booked yet and since we don't have a way to call people I have to wait the two days it takes Belizians to return an email to see if we have secured a tour...oh Belizian time!). The tour end up just being my sister and I and our guide which at first I thought was weird but ended up being awesome. He was very funny and had a lot to tell us about the history of Belize, the plants life in the area etc.
We had to hike 30 mins through the jungle which was pretty hilarious in a bikini. Once we got to the caves, our guide swam and guided us through while pointing out the various rock formations. The Mayans believed that the cave system was a gateway to the underworld and its easy to see why; it was SO dark and would be terrifying if you were alone, but was really cool to see with our headlamps.
We then took a water taxi to Caye Caulker which finally looked like the Belize we had envisioned. Beautiful beaches and quaint little shops are all the eye can see on this tiny island. Everyone is friendly and we definitely feel safe here (unlike in Belize city). We are staying at a hostel called Yuma's guesthouse which is so cute and definitely made for backpackers.
Alyssa did her first load of laundry (which consisted of taking her dirty clothes into the shower with her) and luckily they dried within hours on the drying rack they provided for us. We went to have drinks at this sports bar right down the way from our hostel which had live music and seemed to be a "happening place". They ended up having a trivia night so we stayed and won 2nd place which got us $20 off our bill (very exciting for travelers on a budget)!! The guy who was conducting the trivia night actually owned the place and came over to hang out with us after the trivia. It turns out he owns the bar and is from Texas. He came here to visit years ago and just decided to never leave. It is a beautiful place; it would be a great place to get stuck! See below for the guys business card, he was quite a character!
Caye Calker seems to be just what I was hoping for! I'm glad we get to stay here for a few days.
Wow! You picked a great starting place for your trip. The water caves look really cool... as long as I have light and company! :)
