Today was glorious because we got to sleep in! There are few things I love more than getting a solid 8 hours of sleep. The wind blows constantly here which is kind of annoying when you are outside (forgo al notions of ever looking cute) but is awesome when you are trying to sleep because its like a huge fan blowing through your window. Once we got up and motivated, we headed out in search of coffee and fruit. Alyssa is a coffee addict, so I'm surprised she had been able to go a couple of days without it, although I think her fear of drinking Belizian water overrode the need for caffeine.
Pretty much any time there is wifi, we are trying to plan some aspect of the trip so there was definitely some Guatemala research going on with our coffee drinking. Post coffee, we went in search of fruit. I thought I was going to buy a mango, but it turns out it was an avocado! There avocados are huge and green; they look just like mangoes. We ended up with a pineapple and some apples and since hostel has all of the kitchen amenities, we were able to make some delicious fruit salad.
We decided we were going to try our luck at swimming to the Northern half of the island (the island was split in half by a hurricane years ago and the Northern half is undeveloped). It is not a far swim, only 75ft or so, but we did not anticipate the strong current. Alyssa is a slender little thing and was almost swept away but with a little encouragement I got her to complete the swim to the other side.
After exploring a little on the uninhibited side (and suffering dozens of mosquito bites) we journeyed back to the Southern half of the island to drink rum and pineapple juice and pretty much laze about.
I had to meet with my dive master for tomorrow's dive during the afternoon, so not much was accomplished (which is actually wonderful, really what is there to accomplish?). We went to dinner at a restaurant called "Enjoy" and split a lobster for $20BZ which would be $10 USD- not bad! We are trying to keep our food budget low so we have money left for the essentials like alcohol. ;). At dinner, we shared a table with a young Canadian couple that had just landed on the island. The guy had backpacked for four months through Asia so we got some good tips from them on things to see while we are the and warned them to steer clear of Belize city. All in all, a great day in paradise!
The uninhibited side of the island, or the uninhabited side? Lol. I hope the former.
