Leaving on a jet plane

Well it's finally here! We are on the flight making our way to Belize city. It seems like so much planning has gone into this trip yet somehow I feel completely unprepared.
Belize city is much less commercial than I would have thought and we are literally the only tourists/white people for miles. We are staying at the Belcove hotel which is nice because its right on the river that divides the town in half but our room doesn't have a/c so I am opting to not shower before we go out to dinner since I will just be immediately sticky anyways.
For dinner, we are headed to the Birds Isle restaurant and bar because according to Lonely Planet, it's the hidden gem of the city and they have karaoke on Thursday nights after 8:00 which should be completely hilarious. We met a nice Canadian couple at the hotel earlier while we we drinking beers on the balcony and they are also going to so at least we know there will be 2 other tourists there. It's only 0.7 miles away, but the Canadians said we should definitely take a taxi because it is very unsafe after dark and I would have to agree. I even got a bit of a sketchy vibe walking around during the day; not something two females should do after dark.
Dinner turned out to be pretty good (we both got fish sandwhiches in an attempt to save money). The BZ is equivalent to $0.50 USD so we are doing pretty good with our spending. The restaurant/karaoke bar was definitely the nicest place in all of Belize city and was set right on the waterfront. There is a group of African American college students here on a class trip that is also staying at our hotel (they really blend in here so they don't get the looks that we get). When they got to the karaoke bar, they were singing a lot of Beyonce and dancing a little risqué whereas all of the Belizians we're singing love songs from 1991 (hilarious to watch the pissed off reaction of the locals to her dance moves). I was surprised to see some of the locals choose country songs (also for the 90's).
Tring to leave the restaurant was a little more complicated because no cabs were waiting out where this place is located and floods of locals were coming to the place (being the ONLY white people around meant we were getting a good deal of male harassment since we really stood out). The group of college kids ended up leaving shortly after us so we shared a taxi with the Beyonce singing girl (I secretly love her, she was pocket sized and full of sass) and made it back to our hotel safe and sound. Of course, there is another bar right next to our hotel that is playing the WORST American music imaginable at the highest volume they can. Combine that with the sweltering heat and it'll be a long night! Tomorrow onwards to Caye Caulker!
