Bocas del Drago

Today I slept in until 11:00 which I haven't done in a very long time- it was glorious! We thought we would miss the 12:00 shuttle to Bocas del Drago by the time we got ready and picked up some lunch, so we settled on going to red frog beach instead. We began to walk around the town, planning to hit up the deli or the wrap place to get something we could bring in our cooler to the beach but every single restaurant in town was closed. It was nuts. I guess it could be because it was Sunday, but seriously, everything single place?!? We weren't sure what to do since we wouldn't have any food to bring with us when we noticed a bus to Bocas del Drago pull into the bus stop. It was 12:45 and the next shuttle wasn't supposed to be until 2:00, but it turns out today there was one at 1:00. The driver assured us that there was a restaurant we could eat at on the beach so we took the 45 minute bus ride down the coast. When we got there, the beach was not what I expected. It wasn't very pretty, just happened to be where the water met the sand.
We stopped to get lunch at the restaurant on the beach. Unfortunately they didn't have any healthy options so we were stuck with chicken fingers and rice with plantains. The service was SO slow and the server actually seemed annoyed that she had to be waiting on us. In the end, we resorted to standing next to our table in a sort of protest u til someone brought us our check. Luckily this place did not have the usual 10% tip built into the check so no tip for her.
We then went down the to beach. It was ok, but we have been to much nicer beaches here in Bocas; this one in particular was covered in trash, probably because there are no trash cans to be found. We took the short walk down to Star Beach where you can find tons of starfish hanging out in the shallow water. Alyssa snorkeled around finding star fish and stingrays while I read on the beach. There was not much sun and it wasn't a great beach day, so we left after a few hours.
When it came time for dinner, I wasn’t very hungry so I was trying to defer to Alyssa on what she'd like to eat. We checked out the infamous chicken place but they only served chicken and french fries which didn't sound great and then looked at the Italian place but neither of us felt hungry enough to eat a whole meal. All of the back and forth resulted in a lot of frustration and our first traveling fight. She left and went back to the hostel to cool off while I wandered around town looking for something small to snack on. There was a little cafe that had hummus and veggies so I thought that would be perfect with some hot tea for my throat. I waited 45 minutes to even order and then after another 20 minutes still waiting for her to bring me anything, I gave up and left. The service in Panama is unbelievably bad. It's like you are such an inconvenience to the people who work in the restaurants; they would much rather be chatting or texting. I ended up at the grocery store and bought some chicken noodle soup and ritz crackers. Once back at the hostel, Alyssa and I talked things out and I'm sure our communication will be much better in the future. Traveling and spending 24/7 with anyone is a challenge so we are bound to have misunderstandings from time to time.
